Welcome to my blog! My old site down for good and I do not know when
it will be up again if ever... So I am here now doing my blogging and
now I decide to do it both in Russian and English.
Vassili.
I am not "real scientist", I learned how to do sharpening and many follows my steps. This method works,
even it does not use Spyderco tools. It is possible to whittle hair by using Spyderco sharpeners, but no one
put together any guide on how to do so. Sorry.
Here it is - pretty simple:
http://nozh2002.blogspot.com/2011/08/blog-post_02.html
You oiled it and then touch it with your hand when it was closed - it is pretty clear from the marks on the blade.
Part with you touch has less or no oil, part of the blade which was inside handle has more oil. Thin layer of oil
change blade surface a little and make it appear different. Nothing wrong with your blade.
You may re oil it or take oil off.

Hitachi YSS manufacturing plant known for high quality steels and on the edge technologies.
Also it is quite healthy to my knowledge, while Crucible gone bankrupt not so long ago. It is not
surprise that it outperforms Crucible.
Again there are a lot of Xperts who can "read" composition and do not need to really use knives
to say how good steel is. But in real World this is same as reading "hand lines". So answer like
tungsten 1-1.15% content or 1.3% carbon would be really misleading. I am pretty sure if other
manufacturer do the same - result will be different.
I think that somehow over many years YSS found just right mix and right process to do very well
performing steel - it just happened!
I should also not that Aogami most likely way older then any steels you mentioned here.
Blue steel has little tungsten in it to make heat treatment bit easy for smith who can not yet catch pre tempering temperature by eye, blue steel has tempering
window wider. This tungsten does not make it performance better.
This still is quite corrosive, but it outperforms VG-10 and pathetic CPM S30V by far.
There is no such things as this steel can be sharper then other as well as this steel is harder to sharpen.
Most of this talks come from people who do not know proper sharpening technic - do not listen to them
they are not an experts.
Vikings use pattern in their swords to make them stronger. Combination of soft iron and hard steel with certain spring like pattern adds
some spring like properties. Modern days it is nothing but pattern, which somehow I do not like and performance is not very good
it actually worse then component performance. Unless it is suminogashi - where layers made the way that only good steel ends up
on the edge.
There are some urban legends about damscus better performance - like damascus serration etc... You may see them in Sal's post.
But it is not really the case.
Modern layered steels has nothing to do with old Damascus swords or old Viking spring patterns - it is just catchy sales person story.
Now days it is just ornaments and skilled craftsman may do damascus which performs as good as regular steel.
People say the Wear Resistance is in line with CPM-S30V. CPM-S30V is supposed to be chippy, CPM-S30V is designed to offer higher wear resistance when toughness isn't needed. CTS-XHP has more toughness than CPM-S30V, so it should offer you a more well rounded user steel than S30V depending on what you use it for. This is absolutely not true. When back in 2003 CPM S30V were pushed in knife market everybody were saying that it is not as good as CPM S60V in edge holding, but it is much tougher and it was designed this way. Like it is as good as A2 in toughness... Now some Xpert without any ideas what he is talking about pop up with this nonsense and I bet will be referred to by many like him, just because he generated posts about 4 per day for last 4 years!
