Simple light set up for knife photography

Старая запись в блоге о том как фотографировать ножи с минимальным бюджетом...
Я фотографирую ножи используя ведомые вспышки которые расставляю слева и справа, но это требует определенных инвестиций в аппаратуру которая позволяет все это делать. Но хорошие фотографии так же можно сделать имея в своем распоряжении солнце, мусорный пакет или белый пенопластовый стенд для школьников - все за копейки.

I am making pictures using two save flushes, which I position on the left and on the right of the knife, but this require some investment in good camera and flushes which can communicate each other remotely. But good pictures can be done with just good Sun, trash bag or dfoam screen for school presentations - all cost almost nothing.

Решил сделать снимки одного и того же ножа - как они получаются на солнечном свете при разных вариантах световых инсталляций.

I try to make pictures under Sun with different set ups and see how it turns out with same knife. 

Без фильтров и экранов - просто бросил нож на стол и сфотографировал:

No filter now screens - just throw knife on the table and make picture of it:

 

Очень резкие тени, лезвие сине-серое из-за отражения неба в стали - видно не очень хорошо (надписи и пр...).
Shadows are too sharp, blade is blueish-greyish because sky is reflecting in steel - not very visible (labels etc...) -  

То же самое но солнце сзади ножа:

Наверно самый худший вариант. К резким теням и невнятному клинку, большая часть рукояти не видна и черное пятно тени на переднем раздражает.
This is worst variant, in addition to sharp shadows and unvisible blade, biggest part of handle is not visible - like black hole in front of the knife.
 
С диффюзным фильтром сделанным из пластикого мусорного пакета, снято так что бы пакет отражался в лезвии. Просто накрыл нож фильтром как крышей и сфотографировал:

Now I use diffusive filter (white trash bad), and position it so it reflect in the blade. Which mean I just have this filter on top of the knife on some distance (feet or two) - it cover knife like a roof an make picture, easiest set up with filter. 

Гораздо лучше. Тени мягкие. Клинок виден превосходно.

Much better - shadows are soft and blade perfectly visible.

То же ничего, но опять черное пятно спереди и большая часть рукояти скрыта.

Blade is OK, but same black hole hiding good part of the handle...

 
Теперь что бы продемонстрировать что важно что отражается в лезвии, то же вариант с рассеянным светом от пакета, но с небом отражающимся в клинке:

Now to show that key to success in knife photography is not diffused light but what is reflected in the blade, let me do same with diffusive filter (white trash bag) not being reflected in the blade, so here is sky reflecting in the blade again:

 

Сразу как то картинка ухудшилась.

So you see that picture is not as good as previous.

Вот собственно фильтр:

This is my diffusive filter made out of white trash bag. If you want you may get "professional" one for half hundred bucks which is not actually not as good as this one - much darker. Most interesting part is that actual professionals uses one made of trash bag (where do you think I learns that - reading photo forums and books)...    

Теперь то же но с отражающим экраном, в клинке отражается экран:

Same can be done with screen which reflects light rather then filter it (foam sheet for school presentations). Here screen not only reflect light on knife to soften shadow, but as well used to make blade white by reflecting in it:

 

Здесь картинка более контрастная чем с фильтром - почти такая же как на первом снимке. Все же свет от солнца не рассеивается - просто на него накладывается свет отраженный о экрана, что подсвечивает тень немного. Но главное что белый экран отражается в клинке делая его хорошо видимым.

Picture here more contrast then with filter - almost like on the first sample. Sunlight not diffused - only reflected light from screen added on top of it, which make shadows bit softer.  But important is - white screen reflection in the blade which make it perfectly visible.

То же с небом отражающимся в клинке:

And just to see how reflection is important - I made pictures with sofe reflecting light, but without screen reflecting in the blade, but sky -

(there is wrong comment on the photo - screen is not reflecting in the blade)

Понятно что в первую очередь именно отражение в клинке делает картинку!

So I hope I make it very clear that most important in knife photography is what is reflected in the blade.

 
Вот собственно этот отражающий экран в том виде как я снял фотографию №8 - просто снимал с другой точки:

Here is that foam screen - same set up I used for photo №8, I just made that picture from different point:

 

Таким образом я бы рекомендовал инсталляцию с картинок №3 и №8 - то есть Солнце с той же стороны что и фотоаппарат, что бы не получалось черых дыр пожирающих рукояти и с фильтром или экраном отражающимся в клинке.

So finally I would recomment set ups for pictures №3 and №8 - sun is on the camera side (to avoid black holes eating handle) and filter or screen reflecting in the blade.
